Common Subaru Liftgate Problems
If you are experiencing issues with your Subaru liftgate, you know how frustrating it can be. Knowing what to look for can help you diagnose the issue accurately and get your liftgate back to proper working condition.
In this blog, we look into some of the common liftgate issues Subaru owners may experience and discuss why these issues can occur.
Liftgate Doesn't Respond To Remote

This issue can be caused by several things, most commonly:
- Sensor or Switch Malfunctions - If the liftgate won't respons to your remote, it may be due to a sensor or switch that has failed or is malfunctioning. Sometimes, a software reset is all that is needed to solve the issue. But sometimes, you may need to replace the sensor or switch as well.
- Key Fob Issues - Your key fob battery may be low or there may be something interfering with the signal. Try a new battery or moving the vehicle.
Liftgate Does Not Stay In The Up Position
If the hatch lift support is worn, it won’t be able to hold the liftgate in position. This is a common issue in older Subarus and on vehicles where the liftgate is used frequently.
If the liftgate does not open all the way, there may be an issue with the electronic height adjustment. Check the liftgate height setting and correct if needed.
Liftgate Beeps But Does Not Open Or Close
If your liftgate is trying to open or close but just beeps, there may be an obstruction preventing it from working. Check to see whether some luggage or a loose bit of vehicle trim is in the way.
Electrical issues and liftgate motor problems can also result in similar symptoms. Listen for motor sounds - if the motor does not engage at all, it may have failed.
Liftgate Doesn't Latch

This can occur if your liftgate or liftgate supports have been bent or damaged. This can result in the latch being misaligned with the liftgate, which will prevent it from closing. You'll likely hear the "whirr" of the motor attempting to latch, but it won't be able to securely connect.
Liftgate Wear And Tear
Liftgates, like any car part, your liftgate is susceptible to:
- Damage from harsh weather
- Age-related wear
- Corrosion and rust will weaken components
Your liftgate is a constant-use part and can wear out. The hatch lift support may bedome unable to hold up the liftgate, harsh weather can corrode the locks or the stripping around the liftgate, and the liftgate itself can rust and become weak.
