Power vs. Manual Subaru Liftgates: Which Is More Reliable?
Many modern Subarus come standard with powered liftgates. They certainly offer an added level of convenience over manual liftgates. But complexity usually adds cost, and if a powered liftgate fails, it’s going to cost more than a manual one to fix.
For this article, we look at the pros and cons of both liftgate designs in more detail. Hopefully, providing the information you need to decide which type is best for you.
Manual Liftgates
Manual liftgates require you to physically open and close them. You can still unlock them with a key or remote fob, but they won’t lift or lower on their own. That said, some designs have gas struts that will push the liftgate up once you unlock it. Consider a manual liftgate if you're looking for:
- A gate with no electronic components (aside from the locking actuator)
- A liftate that can be physically opened and closed
Closing a manual liftgate requires you to pull it down and latch it closed. Most modern manual liftgates will still incorporate an electronic locking actuator. This activates when the liftgate is closed, or the vehicle is locked.
Power Liftgates

Many modern Subarus come equipped with power liftgates. The opening and closing functions are motorized. The liftgate can be activated by pressing a button on the dashboard, on the liftgate, or using the remote fob. Power liftgates offer features like:
- A motorized opening and closing feature
- Opening height that can be adjusted
- Hands-free activation (on some models)
Depending on your Subaru model, you can adjust the opening height and close and lock it via a button on the liftgate. Optional on newer Outback models is a hands-free feature that allows you to open the liftgate by placing your hand over the Subaru badge. Follow these directions for operating these functions:
Note: Operating your powered liftgate in winter without first deicing the liftgate can put additional strain on the motor.
Manual Vs. Powered Liftgates

The basic design of both manual and powered liftgate is very similar. They both use similar hinges and gas struts, as well as liftgate designs. The difference is that the powered version has motorized components controlling the opening and closing of the liftgate.
Manual Liftgate Pros
- Less complex design
- Fewer things to go wrong
- Lower potential repair costs
Manual Liftgate Cons
- Requires more effort to operate
- May be difficult to reach up and close liftgate
Manual liftgates are a good option if you want to save some money on the purchase price of a new vehicle. Or just don’t need the added benefits of the powered version.
Powered Liftgate Pros
- Easier to operate when carrying bulky items
- Can adjust opening height
- Can operate from a distance
Powered Liftgate Cons
- The addition of a motor and wiring adds complexity
- More expensive to fix if it breaks (most can still be operated manually if the motor fails)
Power liftgates have the added complexities of a motor, wiring, and switches. These tend to last a long time, but if they fail, there will be an additional repair cost that isn’t a factor with a manual version. This doesn’t necessarily make powered liftgates less reliable, but there are just more parts to consider.
